Maria Dunn (AB)

Originally a Scot but based in Edmonton since the 1990s by way of Ontario, Maria Dunn learned classical piano and sang in community choirs before hosting a campus radio folk program at the U of A. A string of increasingly assured albums since then culminated in Joyful Banner Blazing (2022). Produced by the eminent Shannon Johnson of The McDades and JUNO recipient in the Traditional Roots Album category, the album spent four weeks at #1 on CKUA radio. Dunn’s keen interest in social justice is reflected in her 2012 album Piece by Piece, the story of immigrant textile workers in western Canada; she also collaborates on the Women of Folkways series. mariadunn.com

Joe Jencks (US)

He originally won the hearts of CFC audiences as one third of Brother Sun. Even before that, Joe Jencks was emerging as an internationally respected, award-winning solo musician, singer and songwriter, revered for timeless tunes like “Lady of The Harbor.” His 17th recording, The Coming of the Years (2022) stands firmly in the modern Celtic tradition, exploration themes near and dear to him: the immigrant experience, Irish culture, and blue collar anthems, all delivered with his honeyed voice and precise playing. Echoing his hero MLK, he says, “I am ever a student of how we build a world in which this is the role of justice: to heal what is broken, to correct that which stands in the way of love.” joejencks.com
